The Light of the World

This sermon explores the value of light in both physical and spiritual life, especially in the Christmas season. The central focus is Jesus Christ's declaration 'I am the light of the world,' and the invitation to receive Him in order to walk in the light of eternal life.
The sermon opens with familiar Christmas imagery: gifts and decorative lights. The pastor presents four values of light in human life — light as the source of life, as comfort and safety, as hope, and as a symbol of truth and holiness. Scriptures such as Psalm 27:1, 30:5, 119:105, and Job 30:26-27 are used to illustrate each point.
The next section analyzes the artificial lights of the world — from electric lights in major cities to the inspiring examples of great historical figures. The pastor points out that no matter how impressive artificial light may be, it can always be cut off or destroyed, and it cannot dispel the true darkness of human life: loneliness, despair, illness, loss, and death.
The pastor then presents two fundamental differences between worldly light and light from heaven. First, the light from heaven was foretold by the prophet Isaiah more than 700 years in advance (Isaiah 9:1, 5-6). Second, Jesus Christ Himself claimed to be the fulfillment of that prophecy and declared: 'I am the light of the world' (John 8:12). No religious leader, philosopher, or great figure in history has ever dared to make such a bold claim.
The sermon includes the story of Dr. E. Wesley Ely about a 39-year-old patient who died of cancer, a woman who did not believe in God. This story illustrates the powerlessness of science and medicine before the deepest spiritual questions of human existence. Dr. Ely acknowledged that no microscope or laboratory test could answer questions about his patient's spiritual condition.
The closing section invites the congregation to receive Jesus Christ as the true light into their lives. The pastor quotes John 1:9-10 and 12 to emphasize that whoever believes and receives Him is given the right to become children of God. This is a light that never goes out, never loses power, and endures forever.
