Eyes of the Flesh and Eyes of the Heart – Lord, Open the Eyes of Our Spirit

This sermon presents a contrast between two worldviews and two ways of perceiving life. The pastor emphasizes that those who see only through the eyes of the flesh (materialist or atheistic perspective) recognize only one material, visible world. They focus on four pursuits: relationships, talents, fame, and money—things they can see and perceive through the five senses. However, death (the fifth T) will ultimately take away everything they accumulate and cherish.

The deep roots of focusing only on material matters stem from two main reasons. First, humans live in a material world and naturally concentrate on what can be perceived through the senses. With modern scientific advancement and materialism, anything that cannot be seen is considered unreal. Second, the powerful attraction of material benefits makes it difficult for humans to escape the temptation. The pastor quotes the words of Christ about the wealthy: it is very difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of heaven because they prioritize their visible material life over unseen spiritual blessings. However, Scripture teaches there are two different worlds: the visible material world (temporary) and the invisible spiritual world (eternal).

The fundamental difference between these two worldviews lies in three aspects: understanding of the world, life priorities, and conception of death. Those who believe Scripture's teaching acknowledge the existence of both worlds and prioritize spiritual life over material life. Regarding death, Scripture teaches three types of death: physical death (the first death), spiritual death, and eternal death (the second death) in hell. Spiritual death occurs when a person still breathes but their spirit belongs to Satan, completely disregarding spiritual values.

The Holy Spirit is the key to opening the eyes of the heart. The pastor uses the example of Saul (Paul) on the road to Damascus: when Christ appeared to him, Paul's physical eyes were blinded, but at that very moment his spiritual eyes were enlightened to see Christ as the Savior. Similarly, Satan blinds the spiritual eyes of those who do not believe in God, preventing them from seeing the glory and salvation in the Gospel. Only when someone's spiritual eyes are opened by the Holy Spirit can they perceive the true value of redemption, the spiritual blessings in heaven, and accept Jesus Christ.

The pastor cites Paul's prayers in Ephesians 1:15-23 and 3:14-21 to illustrate what is truly important when praying for believers. Paul never prays for things related to the material world such as health or economic prosperity. Instead, he prays that God would enlighten the eyes of the heart so that believers understand the great hope of His calling, realize the riches of the glory of His inheritance, and know His unlimited power toward those who believe. The difference between believers growing closer to God and lukewarm believers lies precisely in their spiritual eyes: those whose spiritual eyes increasingly brighten will see more clearly the value of salvation, treasure the Church, and desire to serve God faithfully to bring glory to His name.
