Why I Believe in Jesus Christ

This sermon presents reasons to believe in Jesus Christ based on His own claims about Himself. Through Scripture, the sermon demonstrates that Jesus is the Messiah, God incarnate, and the only way to salvation.
The sermon begins by establishing a fundamental question: Who is Jesus? Through the dialogue between Jesus and His disciples (Mark 8:27-30), the sermon shows that although many people have different opinions about His identity, Peter made the correct confession: "You are the Messiah." The sermon emphasizes that to believe in Jesus Christ, we must understand what He claimed about Himself and what Scripture says about Him.
The second section develops three main aspects of Jesus' claims: prophet, personhood, and authority. Regarding the prophetic aspect, the sermon demonstrates that Jesus fulfilled all Old Testament prophecies, including being born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14), born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), and other predictions. Regarding His personhood, the sermon emphasizes that Jesus is sinless (John 8:46), existed from eternity (John 8:57-58), and is God Himself (John 10:30, John 14:6-9). These claims caused anger among the Jews because they understood Jesus was claiming to be God.
The third section focuses on Jesus' authority, including authority in teaching, authority to forgive sins, authority to judge all nations, and authority to give eternal life. The sermon demonstrates that only God has the power to forgive sins (Luke 5:21), yet Jesus claimed and exercised this authority (Matthew 9:5-6, Luke 7:48-49). He also claimed to be "the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6), "the light of the world" (John 8:12), and "the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25-26). The sermon concludes by emphasizing that Jesus humbled Himself, took the form of a servant, and became obedient to death on the cross (Philippians 2:5-8).
The application of the sermon is that each person must face the question Jesus posed: "Who do you say I am?" The Gospel is not merely accepting Jesus' claims about Himself, but converting and receiving Him as Savior and Lord of one's life. The believer must not be ashamed of believing in Him and must know that He has power to keep what has been entrusted to Him (2 Timothy 1:12).
