Character of the Heart – Comparison & Jealousy

The first section of the sermon, based on 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, presents the characteristics of God's love in detail. True love is not jealous, does not boast, and is not proud; instead, it bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. The pastor emphasizes that love is the foundation of Christian ethics and stands in complete opposition to the spirit of envy.

The second section develops the argument that jealousy results from greed and injustice. Through passages such as Romans 1:28-31, Galatians 5:25-26, and James 3:14-16, the pastor shows that jealousy leads to strife, deceit, and all manner of unrighteousness. False doctrines and personal ambition are also listed as subtle forms of envy. The pastor stresses that those who are jealous are especially those who boast of their knowledge and status without a reverent heart.

The third section applies the message to practical life through Psalm 73, where the psalmist admits that he became envious of the wicked who prospered. However, when he entered the sanctuary of God, he recognized their end and was guided by God's hand. The sermon calls believers to live according to the Holy Spirit rather than following emotions of jealousy or comparison with others.

The fourth section emphasizes the transformation of the soul when we recognize that God is the only inheritance needed. When my soul was bitter and my heart was grieved, I could still cling to God because He holds my right hand and guides me with His counsel. Believers are encouraged to reconsider their priorities and trust that God is sufficient, surpassing all the wealth, fame, and power that the world offers.
