Prophecy About the Light of the World

This sermon presents Old Testament prophecies about Jesus as the Light of the World, fulfilled in His birth and ministry. Against the dark historical backdrop of a divided Israel, God promised a Savior who would dispel the darkness of sin and death with the light of life.
The sermon opens with Jesus' declaration in John 8:12, "I am the light of the world," and grounds this statement in the context of Old Testament prophecy. The pastor traces the history of Israel from the division of the kingdom in 930 BC through the reign of King Ahaz, when the nation was threatened by the Syrian-Ephraimite coalition and the people lived in deep fear and instability.
In the midst of that crisis, God spoke through the prophet Isaiah with a clear promise in Isaiah 7:14 that a virgin would conceive and bear a son named Immanuel, meaning "God with us." The sermon explains the dual fulfillment of this prophecy: the birth of Isaiah's son Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz served as an immediate sign for Israel, while the ultimate and complete fulfillment came only in the birth of Jesus Christ as recorded in Matthew 1:21-23.
The pastor cites scholar Edward J. Young to emphasize that the darkness the people were enduring was not merely the darkness of foreign Assyrian invasion, but something far deeper — the darkness of sin and spiritual death within, which no human heart could dispel on its own. Because the human heart is itself filled with darkness, the light that comes from God is indispensable and irreplaceable.
The prophecy of Isaiah 9:1 and 9:5 finds its fulfillment when Jesus begins His ministry in Galilee, recorded in Luke 4:20-21 when He declares that Scripture was fulfilled that very day. John 1:4-5, 9 confirms that in Him was life, and that life was the light of mankind, shining into the darkness which cannot overcome it.
The sermon closes with a solemn warning from John 3:19-20 that although the light has come into the world, many people still choose to love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil. A rich list of titles for Jesus is presented — from Messiah and Everlasting Father to Mighty God, Bread of Life, and Living Water — affirming that He is the complete answer to every spiritual need of humanity.
