Testing and Temptation

The first section presents the fundamental distinction between testing and temptation. Testing is God's instrument to discipline His people, designed to produce perseverance and bring believers to spiritual maturity and completeness. Temptation originates from the devil, the world, and the flesh, with the goal of causing people to sin, destroying faith, and severing relationship with God. Scripture in James 1:13 clearly affirms that God cannot be tempted by evil, and He does not tempt anyone.

The second section develops the progression from temptation to sin as outlined in James 1:14-15: desire entices and allures a person, when desire conceives it gives birth to sin, and when sin is full-grown it produces death. The sermon illustrates this process with the story of Adam and Eve in Genesis, where the serpent tempts the woman by making the fruit attractive in appearance (good to eat, pleasant to the eye, desirable for gaining wisdom), leading to humanity's foundational sin.

The third section examines the history of Israel as clear examples of testing and human response. From Cain with his rejected offering, Noah's drunkenness, Abraham's trial concerning Isaac, to the Israelites in the wilderness complaining, becoming angry, and losing reverence for God—all demonstrate that humanity's actual struggle is not with temptation from God but with failure to control the desires within themselves.

The fourth section emphasizes that fundamental foolishness is blaming God rather than taking responsibility for one's own sinful choices. Proverbs 19:3 affirms: "A man's own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the Lord." People commonly accuse God for the consequences of their own sinful decisions. Instead, God's true purpose in testing is to teach people that they live not by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

The final section applies the message to real life: you must learn to distinguish between purposeful testing that builds character and destructive temptation that seeks to ruin you. When you endure testing, you will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him. However, you must take personal responsibility for controlling your inner desires and not blame God. Perseverance through testing must complete its work so that you become mature and complete, not lacking anything in your faith and spiritual life.
