Forgiveness - A Most Precious Heavenly Blessing

This sermon is based on Ephesians 1:3, where the Apostle Paul lists the spiritual blessings from heaven that believers receive when they are in Christ. Among these spiritual blessings, forgiveness of sins is emphasized as the first and most important blessing, because it is the fundamental condition that opens the door to all other blessings. Without forgiveness of sins, one cannot become a child of God, cannot share in the inheritance with Christ, and cannot have the Holy Spirit dwelling in one's life. Forgiveness is the cancellation of debt, the acceptance of paying the price for the losses and damages caused by others instead of demanding they pay.

Through specific examples such as the story of the sinful woman in Luke 7:36-50, the pastor illustrates that forgiveness is the clearest expression of love. Jesus Christ accepted eternal punishment on the cross to save humanity from sin, rather than demanding that they bear the punishment themselves. This forgiveness is not given only once when a person believes in Jesus, but is given daily in life because we sin every day. Scripture emphasizes that if God does not forgive, no one could survive, as Psalm 130:3-4 states.

However, although believers receive such great forgiveness from God, they struggle to forgive others. The sermon presents examples of family conflicts, marriages broken over seemingly trivial matters like a bar of soap or hurtful words, and school violence, all stemming from hardness of heart and lack of forgiveness. The pastor points out that even in churches, forgiveness and grace are often harder to find than in the outside world, as believers judge, condemn, and criticize those who sin instead of forgiving them.

The reason believers find it difficult to forgive is that they have not truly experienced God's great forgiveness and have not truly understood that they have been given all spiritual blessings from heaven as promised in Ephesians 1:3. If believers truly were spiritually rich, filled with all the spiritual blessings from heaven, forgiveness would become as easy as a billionaire forgiving the loss of a ring. Forgiveness must become a habit of the heart, flowing naturally from the real experience of Christ's love and forgiveness every day. When believers truly realize that they have been forgiven so much, their love for God will overflow, making forgiveness a natural response of the heart.
