Life and Death in the Power of the Tongue – The Strength of Words

This sermon explores the extraordinary power of words based on Proverbs 18:21 and James 3:1-12. Words possess three primary powers: controlling, destructive, and nourishing. The pastor teaches that our words determine our entire lives and will be the basis for God's judgment of us.
The first section presents the central theme of the sermon: words are the most important means of communication between people. Through words we express our will, thoughts, and feelings. The Book of Proverbs teaches most about words with 101 verses, because words can revive a desperate nation but can also kill a hopeful person. Scripture clearly teaches through Matthew 12:34-37 that on judgment day each person will be judged by their own words.
The second section develops the thesis about three powers of the tongue. First is the power of control: a small bridle controls a large horse, a small rudder directs a large ship. Similarly, the tongue must be controlled to speak good words befitting a believer. Christians need to let God control their tongues, not allowing circumstances or others to dictate their speech. Second is the power of destruction: a small fire can burn down a large forest; a seemingly small word can destroy friendship, honor, trust, even careers and God's work. The tongue is compared to destructive fire and a poisonous beast. Third is the power of nourishing and building.
The third section applies the message to real life by presenting the tongue's power to nourish and build. Words are compared to fresh water and fruit that sustain human life. A sincere compliment can bring joy for an entire week; words of comfort and encouragement bring new strength and hope. The sermon offers five specific recommendations: be careful when joking, do not criticize immediately after work, think before asking for feedback, avoid speaking evil of others behind their backs, and practice confessing errors and forgiving. The pastor emphasizes that God abhors lying and divisive words, therefore believers must pray asking God to guard their mouths and hearts.
