Perspectives on Marriage
Pastor Tan Thai · Jul 29, 2012
This sermon examines perspectives on marriage from cultural, social, and biblical standpoints, grounded in Genesis 2:18-25. The pastor demonstrates that only God's design for marriage provides a true and lasting foundation for marital blessing.
The sermon opens with the familiar image of bumper stickers on cars, leading into the central theme: people hold many different views on marriage — from belief in fate arranged by mythical matchmakers, to physical beauty, romantic love, social status, or mere chance. Each perspective arises from personal experience or social influence, yet none provides a sufficiently solid foundation to guarantee lasting marital happiness.
The pastor presents the concerning state of marriage in modern American society: the marriage rate dropped from 72% in 1960 to 50% in 2008, while the divorce rate has approached 50%. The trend of cohabitation before marriage not only fails to resolve the problem but actually increases the risk of separation, with statistics showing only 20% of cohabiting couples remaining together after five years. Remarrying multiple times also does not improve outcomes — divorce rates increase with each subsequent marriage.
The biblical view of marriage is presented clearly through Genesis 2:22-24, emphasizing that marriage was instituted by God for a man and a woman. Marriage is not a social contract or the result of fleeting emotion, but a sacred union — even called a mystery in Scripture — reflecting the relationship between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:25-32). Therefore, marriage must be held in honor by all, and the marriage bed kept pure (Hebrews 13:4).
The sermon stresses that the Bible teaches love must be expressed in concrete actions: husbands are to love and sacrifice for their wives as Christ loved the Church; wives are to respect their husbands and recognize the husband as head of the household. Both spouses must together submit to God's Word and acknowledge God as Lord of the family. Marriage is a great blessing God grants to men and women, as confirmed in Proverbs 18:22 and 19:14.
The pastor concludes with an honest acknowledgment that while most people enter marriage with sincere love and genuine desire for lifelong companionship, the realities of life often shatter those initial dreams. The root cause is sin within the human heart — selfishness, pride, lust, and greed. Yet believers have hope, because they can lean on God's provision, forgiveness, and answered prayer throughout the challenging journey of marriage.
