On What Foundation Do We Build?

This sermon, based on Matthew 7:24-27, examines the parable of the two builders to emphasize that hearing God's Word is never enough — it must be lived out. Believers are called to build their lives on the only true foundation, Jesus Christ, so that they will stand firm when life's storms inevitably come.
The sermon opens with vivid real-world illustrations of collapsed buildings in Sichuan, China following the 2008 earthquake, and similar collapses in Saigon and Hanoi, all traced back to shallow foundations and inferior building materials. These concrete examples lead into an exposition of Matthew 7:24-27, the closing parable of the Sermon on the Mount. The preacher emphasizes that the Sermon on the Mount was never meant merely to increase knowledge — its purpose is obedience and lived application.
The sermon unpacks the symbolic meaning of the house: it represents a person's entire life — relationships, family, career, and material possessions. The quality of the foundation determines the fate of everything built upon it. Paul affirms in 1 Corinthians 3:11 that no foundation other than Jesus Christ can be laid. A person who hears God's Word but does not live by it — no matter how much biblical knowledge they possess — is like the foolish builder on sand, vulnerable to collapse at any time.
The second section addresses the unavoidable storms of life. Rain falling from above, floodwaters rising from below, and winds battering from every side represent sickness, loss, betrayal, war, and hardship. Job 5:6-7 confirms that human beings are born to trouble. Storms do not merely destroy what we have built — they reveal the true foundation beneath. The preacher asserts that genuine faith can only be distinguished from counterfeit faith when tested by trial.
The final section challenges believers not only to choose the right foundation but also to build with quality materials. Drawing on 1 Corinthians 3:12-14, the preacher teaches that once Jesus Christ is the foundation, each believer still chooses whether to build with gold, silver, and precious stones or with wood, hay, and straw — that is, whether to invest their life in things of eternal value or not. The fire of the final judgment will test every material. Those who treat faith like an insurance policy — content merely to secure a place in heaven without faithful service — will lose the reward God has prepared for the faithful.
