All Things Work Together for Good

This sermon was preached on Sunday, January 9, 2022, grounded in Romans 8 and centered on four absolute, certain guarantees that God gives to all who have truly received Jesus Christ as their Savior. The pastor emphasizes that regardless of the circumstances of the new year, whether illness, loss, or failure, these four realities remain unchanged for God's children.

The first guarantee is freedom from condemnation, since every debt of sin has been fully paid by the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross once and for all, and believers are justified and reconciled to God (Romans 5:1). The second guarantee is continuous intercession, both by the Holy Spirit who intercedes with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26) and by Jesus Christ who sits at the right hand of God and prays on our behalf (Romans 8:34). The third guarantee is the inseparable love of God, which cannot be cut off by anything from within or outside our lives, including death, life, tribulation, or any created thing (Romans 8:35, 38–39).

The fourth and central guarantee is the promise of Romans 8:28, that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. The pastor addresses two common misunderstandings: the first is passive fatalism, assuming that because God has ordained outcomes, personal responsibility does not matter; the second is despair, assuming that human free will is meaningless under divine sovereignty. Scripture teaches that humans bear responsibility for their choices and actions, but the ultimate outcome rests in God's hands, as illustrated by the Apostle Paul's conduct during the storm at sea (Acts 27).

The pastor employs two vivid illustrations to bring this truth to life. Ray Bradbury's science fiction story about a man who accidentally kills a butterfly in the past and changes all of history demonstrates that events are interconnected in ways no human can fully anticipate. Two personal anecdotes about a literature teacher who inspired a love of writing and a demanding Japanese math professor who became a mentor show how seemingly minor or unpleasant events are woven by God into a greater plan of blessing.

The sermon closes with an invitation to those who do not yet know Jesus Christ to receive Him now, to confess Him openly as their Savior (Matthew 10:32), while also recognizing that it is God Himself who draws people to salvation and has chosen them before they chose Him (John 15:16; John 6:44). These four certain guarantees form the foundation of peace and confidence for every believer entering a new year filled with uncertainty.
