According to James 3:5-6, the tongue is compared to a small fire that can burn down a large forest, and it is a world of unrighteousness among the members of the body. The second section develops three primary powers of speech: control, destruction, and nourishment. The teaching presents five qualities that the words of a Christian must possess: truthfulness and honesty (no deception), kindness and compassion (instead of mockery or cursing), wisdom and timeliness (instead of thoughtless speech), few words (instead of excessive talking to show knowledge), and boldness and courage (instead of twisted or evasive speech).
