Being an Ambassador for Christ

The sermon presents the main theme of believers' role as ambassadors (khâm sai) for Christ based on 2 Corinthians 5:20 and the prophet Jeremiah's letter to the Israelites exiled in Babylon. An ambassador is an important official who represents a king or nation, serving not only as the voice and face of the ruler but also representing the entire nation and people. God has entrusted each believer with the responsibility of serving as an ambassador for Christ in their place of residence.

The second section develops the argument that believers must live integrated in society without separation or isolation. The history of Babylon shows that King Nebuchadnezzar captured the Israelites not to destroy them but to assimilate them into Babylonian culture. The prophet Jeremiah taught that despite captivity, the people should not isolate themselves from the city but should remain, establish families, live there, and most importantly, pray for the peace and prosperity of the city (Jeremiah 29:7). The peace of God's people depends on the peace of the place where they live. Believers are called "pilgrims" or "resident aliens" - permanent residents but not native citizens, as described in 1 Peter 2:11-12.

The third section applies the message to the congregation's practical life by warning against two wrong attitudes: complete isolation or complete assimilation. Believers should not separate from society for fear of becoming defiled, nor should they allow the world to assimilate them by placing self above all else and worshiping material gods such as money, status, beauty, and fame. Like lotus flowers in mud, believers must live close to the world without allowing their spiritual lives to become contaminated. Believers must not conform to this age but be transformed by the renewing of the mind (Romans 12:2).

The fourth section describes the standards of a true ambassador for Christ. An ambassador must be completely loyal to the king he represents and must understand the king's will and the responsibility entrusted to him. An ambassador must harmonize with all people for Christ's sake while sacrificing personal interests, as Paul taught in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, becoming all things to all people so that he might save some. Believers must incarnate themselves as Christ incarnated, touching the dust of the world but not allowing it to defile their spiritual nature and character.

The final section concludes that God places each believer in their current position not by chance but with the purpose of proclaiming the Gospel. God came into the world to save it, and believers must also enter the world to witness and serve. This is the noble mission of each person who serves as an ambassador for Christ.
