Wisdom and Truth

This sermon explores the inseparable relationship between true wisdom and truth found in God, contrasting it with worldly wisdom that lacks moral foundation. Believers are called to know God, know themselves, know others, and know the path God has set before them in order to live a rich and purposeful life.
The sermon opens by distinguishing between knowledge and true wisdom. The pastor uses a humorous illustration from a news article about medical experts warning parents against letting children play outdoors, demonstrating that bare knowledge without sound judgment does not produce wisdom. According to Proverbs, true wisdom equals knowledge combined with understanding, intelligence, and prudence, but most importantly it must be grounded in the fear of God as stated in Proverbs 9:10-11.
The heart of the sermon revolves around four foundational truths the wise person must know. First is knowing God — not merely having knowledge about Him but trusting Him wholeheartedly as Proverbs 3:5-7 commands. The pastor notes that Satan from the beginning used deception to cast doubt on God's goodness and love, and that only Jesus Christ claims to be the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6; John 8:12) — not merely pointing toward truth as other religious founders do, but being the truth himself. Second is knowing oneself, meaning a clear awareness of one's own limitations, weaknesses, and failures rather than comparing oneself to others or stubbornly refusing to admit fault.
Third is knowing others, recognizing that God uses the church — composed of ordinary, flawed people — to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in each believer. It is through interaction with brothers and sisters in Christ that we learn to ask for forgiveness, practice patience, humility, and genuine unity. Fourth is knowing God's path, walking the narrow road according to Scripture even amid mockery, contempt, or persecution, because that road leads to abundant life in the present and eternal life in heaven.
The sermon closes with a call for each person to recognize that no one possesses sufficient wisdom, knowledge, or spiritual gifts to walk the Christian life alone. All believers need one another in the church to lift up, encourage, and share in one another's joys and sorrows. A follower of Christ is one who acknowledges that amid the many confusing voices of the world, only the voice of Jesus Christ captures the whole of life and directs every intellectual, emotional, and physical capacity toward the single noble purpose of self-giving.
