When All Doors Are Closed

This sermon explores God's purpose when our paths are blocked or doors are closed to us. Through the account of Paul and Barnabas's separation and Paul's attempts to enter regions where the Holy Spirit forbade him, the sermon teaches that God closing doors is not failure but guidance. We must trust God and heed the Holy Spirit's illumination to discover His higher purpose.
The sermon begins with Paul and Barnabas's mission to revisit the churches they had established. However, their sharp disagreement over whether to take John Mark led to a bitter quarrel that separated them. This was a closed door—a broken plan, a thwarted hope. Yet through this event, God directed Paul with Silas through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches. The sermon reminds us that "Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails" (Proverbs 19:21).
Next, the sermon describes Paul's journey as he attempted to enter other regions but was forbidden by the Holy Spirit: first in Asia, then when attempting Bithynia. Each time a door closed, Paul did not hastily seek alternative routes but listened to the Holy Spirit's leading. This demonstrates deep trust in God's sovereignty. Isaiah 55:8-9 is cited to emphasize that "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord." We cannot understand why doors close, but our frustration or anger does not change God's omniscience.
Finally, the sermon brings us to Paul's vision of the Macedonian man, a clear call from God. After doors have been shut, a new one opens. Paul concludes that "God has called us" to go there. The sermon reminds the congregation that our assurance does not rest on everything we desire coming to pass, but on trusting that God always has a good purpose. Romans 8:28 states: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him." And Jeremiah 29:11 assures us: "For I know the plans I have for you... plans to prosper you and not to harm you." Therefore, when you stand before a closed door, trust the LORD with all your heart, and let Him guide you into the paths He has prepared for you.
