Family Harmony – The Power of Words

Pastor Tan Thai · Oct 27, 2018

John 1:1-4Proverbs 18:1Proverbs 18:13Matthew 12:34-37James 3:5-8Proverbs 18:21Proverbs 12:182 Samuel 6:20Proverbs 15:1Proverbs 15:4Proverbs 16:24Proverbs 12:17Ephesians 4:15Ephesians 4:25Ephesians 4:29

This sermon explores the role of words in building or destroying family harmony, drawing from multiple Scriptures in Proverbs, James, Matthew, and Ephesians. Words reflect the inner spiritual condition of a person and carry the power of life or death in relationships.

The sermon opens with a theological foundation for the importance of words, drawn from John 1:1-4, reminding the congregation that God Himself revealed Himself through the Word. Words are not trivial, because it was through the Word that God created all things and brought life to humanity. This establishes a high standard for every Christian in their daily use of language.

The main body of the sermon focuses on the danger of uncontrolled speech. James 3:5-8 describes the tongue as a small fire capable of burning an entire forest, and Proverbs 18:21 declares that life and death are in the power of the tongue. The example from 2 Samuel 6:20 shows how Michal's contemptuous words toward King David caused deep wounds in their marriage, illustrating that mocking speech can destroy intimacy and harmony in the family.

The sermon also emphasizes that words flow from one's inner spiritual condition. Matthew 12:34-37 teaches that out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks, and every careless word will be accounted for before God on the day of judgment. Proverbs 18:1, 13 warns against the habit of answering before listening, a mark of foolishness that causes unnecessary conflict in the family.

The application section guides the congregation toward wholesome, edifying speech. Proverbs 15:1, 4 and 16:24 describe how a gentle answer turns away wrath and how pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the body. Ephesians 4:15, 25, 29 calls each person to speak the truth in love, to put away falsehood, and to speak only what is good and useful to those who hear, since we are all members of one another in the body of Christ.

The sermon concludes with four discussion questions inviting the congregation to reflect on the impact of words in the family, what the Bible teaches, the obstacles that careless speech creates, and how to speak in ways that bring joy and harmony. This is a call to practically renew the language of family life according to the model of the Word who is God.
