Consider Your Ways

The sermon begins by introducing the book of Haggai, one of the 17 prophetic books of the Old Testament. Though only two chapters long, this book was written within four months (August to December 520 BC) with a critical purpose: to call the people of Judah to resume rebuilding the temple. The preacher explains the historical context, from the temple's destruction by Babylon in 586 BC, through 70 years of exile, to the permission to return under King Cyrus of Persia in 538 BC.

The main section of the sermon addresses the question of priorities in life. Although the Jews returned to their homeland and began rebuilding the temple, after 16 years this work had stopped for three primary reasons: opposition from surrounding nations, the negative attitude of the elders when comparing the new foundation with the former temple's glory, and most importantly, the people's neglect of their original purpose as they focused on daily work and personal survival. The preacher relates these hindrances to modern life, where young people face pressure from demanding jobs, financial concerns, and material goals that cause them to lose sight of the priority to seek God's kingdom first.

The third section addresses the value of service. The prophet Haggai encourages Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the people three times: be courageous, do the work, and do not fear. The preacher points out that many believers, especially those with long experience, may become discouraged when comparing their current work with past accomplishments or revivals. The key lesson is not to compare one's work with others', for God does not evaluate worth based on comparison but on obedience and faith. Glory does not lie in material scale but in God's presence.
