Meeting Jesus – Receiving the Water of Eternal Life

The opening of the sermon introduces the foundational story from John 4:4-9, in which Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at Jacob's Well. Jesus asks her for a drink of water, which surprises her because of the mutual prejudice and rejection between Jews and Samaritans at that time. This encounter emphasizes that there should be no prejudice, discrimination, or contempt toward anyone, as all people need salvation.
The second section develops the central metaphor of the sermon through John 4:10-14. Physical drinking water represents temporary human bodily needs, but we are never fully satisfied by material things; they only quench temporary thirst. In contrast, the living water that Jesus offers brings fundamental and eternal change: "Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst again." This metaphor illustrates the only way human spirits can find true satisfaction.
The third section uses evidence from Ecclesiastes 1:8, 5:10-11, and Proverbs 27:20 to demonstrate that human greed and desire never end. The human eye never sees enough, the ear never hears enough, and the rich always want more. Evidence from 2 Samuel 13:15 about Amnon shows that even romantic love itself can turn into anger and contempt when based on temporary things.
The fourth and final section concludes that everyone worships something—the only question is what we will worship. The sermon emphasizes that temporary things of this world will "swallow you alive" if you do not choose to worship Jesus Christ. Therefore, the Gospel of Jesus comes to all nations and all people, inviting them to receive living water and worship God in spirit and truth.
