Standing Firm Against Temptation

This sermon teaches that God never tempts anyone toward evil, but temptation arises from one's own desires. According to James 1:13-15, temptation has three stages: desire, sin, and death. You must recognize the broad path leading to destruction and choose the narrow gate leading to eternal life.
The sermon emphasizes the source and nature of temptation based on James 1:13-15. God never tempts anyone toward evil, for He is holy and unaffected by any wickedness. Instead, temptation originates from the desires within each person, those lustful cravings that urge us toward sin. Understanding this correctly helps you avoid blaming God and instead take responsibility for your own choices.
The sermon presents three stages of temptation in logical and spiritual sequence. First is the stage of desire, when evil cravings arise in the soul. If we do not resist, desire leads to the second stage: sin, when we act according to those cravings. Finally, sin that goes unrepented leads to the third stage: death, the ultimate consequence of unforgiving sin. Temptation may also come from demons and spiritual forces of darkness, aimed at creating doubt about God's word, His love and care for us, or stirring up jealousy, resentment, and conflict among believers in Christ.
The sermon applies the message by contrasting two paths in life that a person may choose. Proverbs 14:12-13 warns that there is a path that appears right to people, but it leads ultimately to death; though there is laughter for a moment, the heart is grieved, and what seems joyful at the end becomes sorrow. Matthew 7:13-14 is clearer: the wide gate and spacious road lead to destruction, and many enter by it; but the narrow gate and hard road lead to life, and few find it. You must choose the narrow path, which means rejecting evil desires and obeying God's teaching.
Awareness of God's grace is also essential. James 1:17-18 reminds us that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights, and in Him there is no change or shadow of turning. God in His willingness has brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we might be as the firstfruits of His creation. This means you can trust in God's stability and goodness, and rely on His grace to resist temptation. Sanctification is the process of becoming more like Christ, and through it you learn to stand firm against temptation by recognizing evil desires early and rejecting them before they lead to sin and death.
