Standing Firm Against Temptation

This sermon from James 1:12-18 clearly distinguishes between trials and temptation, identifying three dangerous stages of temptation: evil desire, sin, and death. The sermon opens with a crucial distinction between trials and temptation. Trials come from God to refine faith, mature believers, soften them before the Holy Spirit, and make them more like Jesus. The example of Joseph is highlighted: despite being sold into slavery and falsely imprisoned, he remained faithful to God. In contrast, temptation comes from Satan, drawing believers away from God, causing them to doubt His love, and luring them onto the wide road of the world.
The pastor presents three stages of temptation according to James 1:13-15. The first stage is evil desire — normal human needs such as food, clothing, affection, and sexuality — which become sinful when satisfied contrary to God's will. The illustration of the ringtail monkey that cannot release the melon seeds from its fist vividly captures the grip of desire. The power of temptation, as John Piper notes, is its promise of greater happiness, but in reality it delivers only momentary pleasure at a great cost. The second stage is sin — desire gives birth to sin when left unchecked, as seen in David's fall after gazing at Bathsheba one evening. The final stage is death — sin destroys the believer's relationship with God, family, reputation, and faith.
The sermon specifically addresses modern temptations related to the internet, video games, and online pornography, citing Professor Philip Zimbardo's research on the demise of young men. Parents are called to take responsibility for raising their children in God's Word from an early age, following the teaching of Proverbs, so that children will be equipped to stand firm against the increasingly sophisticated temptations of contemporary society.
The closing section redirects the congregation to God's promises in James 1:17-18: every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights, who does not change. The pastor points out that Satan consistently uses the old strategy of convincing believers that God is withholding good things from them — just as he did with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden through the serpent's deceptive question. The congregation is urged not to deceive themselves into forgetting God's love and His generous giving to those who trust Him, and to seek His wisdom to identify personal weaknesses and stand firm against temptation.
