This sermon explores God's sovereignty over all things through the story of Joseph and his brothers. Although Joseph's brothers intended to harm him, God transformed their evil into good to save many lives. Through Joseph's forgiveness and care, the sermon teaches that we should not fear because God is the ultimate Ruler of all.
The opening of this sermon presents the main theme of God's sovereignty through the story of Joseph. Joseph's brothers feared that after their father's death, Joseph would seek revenge for the evil they had done to him. However, instead of retaliation, Joseph revealed the character of a person transformed by God—someone ready to forgive and provide for his family.
The second section develops the theological argument about God's sovereignty. Joseph tells his brothers, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." The sermon uses Romans 8:28 to affirm that "all things work together for good to those who love God." This demonstrates that God not only permits events to happen but directs them according to His divine purpose to bring benefit to you and others. Joseph was sent to Egypt beforehand to preserve the line of Israel and save his family's lives through a great deliverance.
The third section applies the message to the practical life of the congregation. The sermon emphasizes Joseph's words: "Do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your children. And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them." This directs the congregation that when you trust in God's sovereignty, you will not fear difficult situations. The sermon also teaches that followers of Christ must learn to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15-16), especially by not judging and criticizing others in matters of spiritual nurture or personal morality.
