The Lord Apprehended Paul

The opening passage recounts the miraculous conversion of Paul on the road to Damascus. Paul was originally a devout Pharisee, born in Tarsus and educated under Gamaliel, the most respected teacher of his time. He persecuted and imprisoned the disciples of Jesus, even being present and approving of Stephen's execution. But as Paul traveled to Damascus to arrest more believers, God appeared to him in a light brighter than the sun from heaven, and Paul heard the voice of Jesus asking: "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"

The second section develops the profound meaning of this conversion through the very Scriptures that Paul himself later wrote. He recognized that he was the least of the apostles because he had persecuted the Church of God, yet this very fact demonstrated the boundless grace of God. Paul counted all his former possessions—fame, status, knowledge of the law—as loss, because knowing Christ Jesus the Lord was worth far more than all of it. He came to understand that his righteousness did not come from keeping the law, but from faith in Christ, a righteousness that comes from God and is based on faith.

The third section applies this message to Paul's actual life and mission. God not only saved Paul from sin, but appointed him as a servant and witness, sending him to the Gentiles to open their eyes, to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God. Paul's transformation was complete: from one who sought to imprison believers, he became willing to suffer in order to preach the Gospel. The love of Christ compelled him to dedicate his life to God's higher purpose, and he urged those who would follow him to persevere in preaching the Word of God in all circumstances, whether favorable or difficult.
