Opposed But Not Discouraged

This sermon examines Nehemiah's rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls despite opposition from enemies. The key lesson is that faith in God and perseverance help believers overcome difficulties when facing resistance. For Christians today, this means trusting in God even when mocked or challenged.
The opening section of the sermon presents the main theme: believers often face opposition when doing God's work, but should not become discouraged. Through Nehemiah's story, we see that enemies like Sanballat, Tobiah, and the Arabs tried to prevent the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls. They mocked, insulted, and plotted to attack the Jews, yet Nehemiah did not give up.
The second section develops the theological argument that weakness is not a reason to quit. Proverbs 24:10 warns that the faint-hearted will lose heart in times of adversity, but Paul teaches in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 that when we are weak, Christ's strength is most clearly seen. Ezekiel 37:4-6 illustrates resurrection: dry bones can be restored to life, symbolizing God's ability to rebuild what has been destroyed. Nehemiah also prayed to God and asked Him to repay those who mocked the holy work.
The third section shows that Nehemiah and the people prepared to resist opposition. They built the wall with firm determination despite hearing multiple reports of enemy attack plans. Nehemiah stationed guards day and night, organized the people by clans to carry swords and spears, and reminded them that God is great and will fight for them. This demonstrates that faith is not passive but active—preparation and action without fear.
The fourth section applies the message to believers today. When facing mockery, insult, or opposition because of your faith, remember this is not a sign of failure but evidence that you are doing something meaningful. Pray like Nehemiah, prepare your spirit like the wall builders, and trust that God will fight for you. Perseverance in faith is the key to overcoming dark moments.
