The Light of Life

Pastor Tan Thai · Dec 1, 2024

John 8:12John 9:5John 12:46John 7:37-38Psalm 36:9John 12:35-36Matthew 5:14-16Ephesians 5:8-9John 1:4-5John 1:9John 1:9-10

This sermon explores the meaning of light in Scripture, particularly Jesus's declaration that He is the light of the world. Those who follow Jesus will not walk in darkness but have the light of life, and they become light to the world around them.

The sermon presents the profound meaning of light in Christian faith. Light is not merely a poetic image but represents the source of life, security, comfort, and hope. Jesus declares: "I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." This proclamation appears three times in the Gospel of John with variations, emphasizing its importance.

The sermon develops its theological argument by connecting light to truth and the reality of God. Scripture passages demonstrate that in Him is life, and that life is the light of all people. Psalm 36:9 affirms that "the source of life is in You; in Your light we see light." Jesus also emphasizes that those who believe in Him will become children of light, possessing the power to become children of God.

The sermon applies the message of light to the practical life of the congregation through analogy from Matthew 5:14-16. Just as Jesus is the light of the world, believers are also the light of the world. They must not hide their light under a basket but let it shine before all people. This means that those who believe in Jesus must live as examples of brightness—showing kindness, justice, and truthfulness—so that all may see their good works and praise their Father in heaven.

In conclusion, the sermon emphasizes that believers were once in darkness but are now bright in Christ. Ephesians 5:8-9 affirms: "Once you were in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light." The sermon calls the congregation to live in a manner consistent with this new identity, practicing the fruits of brightness in every daily action and decision.
