The Light of Life

The sermon begins by presenting the importance of light in human life. Light is the source of life because without light there is no life; it is a source of comfort and security protecting people from danger; and it symbolizes truth and holiness, in contrast to darkness which symbolizes deception and sin. The pastor uses biblical examples from Psalm 27:1, Psalm 119:105, and Isaiah 9:1 to illustrate light as hope and deliverance.

The second section presents the context of Christ's words in John 7:37 and 8:12. The Feast of Tabernacles is one of the three most important festivals of Israel, commemorating God's care for the people during forty years in the wilderness. The pastor explains two important rituals: each day the priest would pour water from the Pool of Siloam into golden vessels, and each night four enormous lamps, seventy-five feet high, were lit to illuminate all of Jerusalem. This is the setting when Jesus proclaims He is the Living Water (John 7:37-38) and the Light of the World (John 8:12, 9:5, 12:46). The pastor emphasizes that the Feast of Tabernacles was only a shadow, while the reality is found in Jesus Himself, because He is God who led the people by a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night in the wilderness.

The third section validates Christ's claim through three methods. The first way is to listen to and carefully examine Jesus' words as well as His character and moral life; because the greater the claim, the more thorough the verification must be. The second way is through the testimony of trustworthy witnesses, including John the Baptist, the apostle John, thousands of first-century believers, and billions of believers over twenty centuries. The third way is through the prophecies of the Old Testament: Isaiah prophesied about great light from a child born of a virgin (Isaiah 9:1), Micah foretold the child would be born in Bethlehem, Hosea prophesied the family would sojourn in Egypt, and Jeremiah predicted five hundred years in advance that when the child was born many mothers would weep.

The fourth section presents the meaning of Jesus being the Light of Life for those who receive Him. When believing in Jesus, believers receive: (1) new life through regeneration (2 Corinthians 5:17); (2) the Spirit of Truth as light symbolizes truth; (3) the Comforter bringing security; (4) the greatest hope of becoming God's children and living with Him forever in heaven. Furthermore, believers in Jesus not only walk in light but also reflect the source of light to become light in the world (Matthew 5:14-16, Ephesians 5:8-9). The pastor uses the story of a thirty-nine-year-old female patient who did not believe in God, was diagnosed with cancer, and died after eight hours, to illustrate the spiritual need beyond what science can answer.

The final section guides people on how to receive the Light of Life. Scripture teaches three steps: (1) Know that you are a sinner living in the darkness of sin and separated from God; (2) Know that you cannot escape the darkness through good works or virtuous deeds; (3) Believe and receive Jesus Christ as the only source of light to receive salvation, forgiveness of sins, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. The pastor emphasizes that when Jesus came, He brought the light of truth, peace, and hope; He liberated the oppressed and gave them a new status in God's kingdom, especially through His blessings (Matthew 5:3-7). Those who believe in Jesus are granted the right to become God's children, born of God rather than by blood or the will of man (John 1:9-10).
