# The Rock Hyrax - Silver Mouse

The order Hyracoidea consists of small herbivorous mammals commonly called hyraxes, rock rabbits, or rock hyraxes (called "coney" in English). These are animals with rounded bodies, thick fur, and short tails. They typically measure between 30 to 70 centimeters in length and weigh 2 to 5 kilograms. They are often confused with the pika (Order Lagomorpha) and rodents (Order Rodentia), but they are actually more closely related to elephants and manatees. Today, five species of hyrax are recognized: the rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) and the yellow-spotted hyrax (Heterohyrax brucei), both of which live on rocky outcrops including cliff faces in Ethiopia and isolated granite kopjes in South Africa; the western tree hyrax (Dendrohyrax dorsalis), the southern tree hyrax (D. arboreus), and the eastern tree hyrax (D. validus). Their distribution is limited to Africa, except for the rock hyrax, which is also found in the Middle East. Hyraxes typically make their burrows in rocky mountainous regions.

This animal appears in the Old Testament. In the book of Leviticus, chapter 11, God's words to the Israelites are recorded—a list of clean and unclean animals so they would know which ones to eat. In this list are small animals such as the "rock mouse" or "rock rabbit" (Rock Hyrax), the hyrax, a land-dwelling creature with an appearance resembling a large weasel or mouse, usually active at night. It looks like a mountain weasel. Therefore, some Bible translations render it as "mountain weasel." The Traditional version translates it as "field mouse," while some translations call it the "Silver Mouse" (from Chinese characters—Ngan meaning silver; Thu meaning mouse; Ngan Thu meaning "silver mouse"—a type of mouse with silvery-colored fur). The Bible tells us that this is an unclean animal: "Although the hyrax chews the cud, it does not have a divided hoof; therefore it is unclean to you" (Leviticus 11:5). Proverbs 30:26 tells us that although this rock mouse or rock rabbit is small, it finds refuge in the crevices of rocks to preserve its life: "The rock badgers are not a mighty people, yet they make their homes in the rocks" (Proverbs 30:26). Thanks be to God that even small and weak creatures know to find secure rocky crevices as their refuge!

Furthermore, God Himself is the Rock—the Stone—the great Stone—the secure Rock of our refuge. Throughout Scripture, "the rock" is a powerful symbol of God's eternal presence and His everlasting nature. The prophet Moses testified, saying, "The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He" (Deuteronomy 32:4). Here, the Rock represents God's perfection, righteousness, and faithfulness. Similarly, King David testified, "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; my savior, You save me from violence" (2 Samuel 22:2-3).

Likewise, the New Testament affirms that Christ Himself is the spiritual Rock. The apostle Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth that they "drank from the spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:4). Paul connected Christ with the spiritual Rock that flowed with water to sustain the Israelites in the wilderness, emphasizing His role as the source of spiritual nourishment—the Source of Life. The apostle Peter preached about Jesus, saying, "He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone" (Acts 4:11). He also encouraged God's people: "Come to Him, a living stone which has been rejected by men, but choice and precious in the sight of God" (1 Peter 2:4), and "For this is contained in Scripture: 'Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, and he who believes in Him will not be disappointed'" (1 Peter 2:6).

Indeed, the Lord is our safest place of refuge, for God is the living Lord, eternal and unchanging. Therefore, we need not fear when life is full of trials, difficulties, and hardships! King David experienced this truth and declared, "He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God my salvation and my glory rest; the rock of my strength and my refuge is in God" (Psalm 62:6). Let us praise our Lord, the secure Rock, the Source of eternal, unchanging Life! Thanks be to God, who always loves, cares for, and sustains us! We pray that the Lord will strengthen us to always trust in Him—the steadfast Rock of the ages—so that we will not fear or tremble in any circumstance of life. Rather, may we remember to let Christ—the cornerstone of our lives—help us stand firm and proclaim the gospel of salvation, the secure Rock, so that all people might know God! "Trust in the Lord forever, for God is indeed an everlasting Rock" (Isaiah 26:4). Amen!
