The Armor of Defense

This devotion illustrates how God has given each animal its own unique protective armor for survival in the world. Similarly, Christians are equipped with seven spiritual weapons from God: Truth, Righteousness, Faith, the Gospel of Peace, Salvation, God's Word, and Prayer to overcome all attacks from evil forces.

# Armor of Defense

In the animal world, there are creatures that are not fierce and terrifying like lions; yet they too possess peculiar armor to protect themselves. The Pangolin has layered scales—each scale made of keratin, the same material as human fingernails, yet hard enough to withstand the attack of a lion. The Armadillo, with its tough and flexible armor, a biological exoskeleton that allows it to curl into a ball and vanish from danger's reach. The Snapping Turtle, with its bony shell, does not hide away; its defense weapon is confidence itself, along with a bite powerful enough to crush bone. The tiny Porcupine never attacks first, with its quills standing like tiny spears, designed to embed deeper into an enemy with every movement. The Hedgehog transforms itself into a silent fortress, curling into a perfect sphere covered with sharp spines. The Nile Crocodile needs no protective armor to conceal itself; its skin is constructed like ancient stone, sensitive to pressure, hardened through countless battles, unchanging over thousands of years. These special armors reveal something wonderful about our Creator: He does not send any creature into the world without proper protection. Each species is given its own "armor," not to display strength, but to survive amid dangers. They do not create their own armor; they simply live in the conditions the Lord has prepared for them. Thanks be to God: "How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures" (Psalm 104:24); "Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever" (Psalm 111:3).

In our spiritual life, Christians are also given a most powerful "armor" by God to protect our spirits. This armor is not material like hard scales or sharp quills like animals possess, but rather: Truth, righteousness, faith, the gospel of peace, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer (Ephesians 6:14-18). The apostle Paul does not advise us to create armor for ourselves, but he calls upon us: "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes" (Ephesians 6:11). These weapons are the firm armor that comes from God, "through his mighty power" (Ephesians 6:10b), not from personal effort, because human strength cannot overcome the dark, invisible forces—"the devil's schemes." Because we are weak, we need to equip ourselves with God's powerful and unshakeable armor, so that we may stand firm and overcome all forces, temptations, and schemes from the invisible enemy. "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand" (Ephesians 6:12-13).

Though the world is filled with invisible traps from demons, we trust firmly in God, putting on His "armor of power" to overcome every attack. The creatures that God has given armor to protect and sustain themselves are but animals; we, as His beloved people, more precious than any creature, are protected by Him through this refined "armor" when we put it on. We do not fight in our own strength, but in God's strength that sustains us. Only when we put on God's armor are we truly protected. Only when we hide ourselves in Him do we find peace. Let us trust God wholeheartedly, like the apostle Paul when he preached the Gospel: "We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me" (Colossians 1:28-29).

We pray that the Holy Spirit grants us renewed strength and the fullness of His power, to live always in trust, wearing the armor—equipped with the seven necessary spiritual weapons of God—Truth, righteousness, faith, the gospel of peace, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer; so that we are always ready to share the gospel of salvation with all people and stand firm on every step of our journey! Amen!

All creatures in all the world, Created and provided by You with all things, With scales and armor so hard, God gives them strength morning and night, content!

Humanity likewise in every way, The Holy Spirit teaches, watches, and guards, With wholehearted trust and hope, The power and weapons never fear anything!
