# Heart Lake

Heart Lake, L'Etang Baker, in Quebec Province, Canada, is a lake shaped like a heart when viewed from above. This lake is a natural lake, not an artificial one or one modified by machinery. This means the heart shape of the lake was formed through natural processes, not created by humans. One widely accepted explanation is that it was formed by glacial remnants. Although there are no official documents describing it in detail, based on the geographical characteristics and shape of Quebec Province, Canada—a region once covered by glaciers—the shape of Heart Lake very likely formed from glacial activity. When glaciers melted, they left behind depressions called kettle depressions. These hollows filled with rainwater and groundwater, creating small lakes. The erosion and stretching of glaciers could have dragged rocks and soil, creating natural curves. If two small glacial valleys intersected at the right angle, they could have produced two symmetrical curves, resembling two halves of a heart. After the ice melted, sediment continued to accumulate, making the lake's curves more distinct. The development of vegetation surrounding the lake also contributed to creating a clear heart-shaped outline when viewed from above.(1)

Thank God—the Creator—for blessing humankind with a rich and diverse nature, and especially with natural landscapes in the shape of a "heart." When viewing Heart Lake from above, nestled in the Quebec forest, it is absolutely beautiful and miraculous! No one dug, sketched, or arranged anything; rather, through God's work—melting ice, shifting earth, and gathering water—a heart shape appeared, like a gift bestowed by God upon humanity. When we look at Heart Lake, we almost all think of God's love revealed to humankind through this miraculous nature and even in our own hearts—each of us has one!

Indeed, God's love is not something that naturally exists in the world, but originates from Him and has existed since the beginning of creation. Often we only see fragments in life—long winters, erosion, disasters, floods, swamps, lands that seem meaningless. But when God gathers it all together—with His wisdom, skill, and compassion—suddenly a "heart lake" appears in the midst of life! No one loves us the way God loves us. Moreover, God's love is expressed throughout Scripture, so much so that someone has said, "The Bible is a love letter God wrote to humanity." When we read Scripture, we will find the noble qualities of God's love. Below are seven characteristics we can clearly recognize in His Word.

First, God's love is unconditional. He loves all people, regardless of who they are, what ethnicity they belong to, their skin color, or their abilities. God does not base His love on any standard. "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).

Second, God's love is faithful. His love does not change with time, place, circumstances, or human sin. Therefore, God's love is a solid foundation we can rely on at all times and in all places. "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, 'The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.' The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord" (Lamentations 3:22-26).

Third, God's love is sacrificial love. True love is always expressed through action, and God sacrificed His only Son—Jesus Christ—to come into the world and die for the sins of humanity. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). This is an invaluable gift God has given to humankind! Thank God!

Fourth, God's love is healing love. His love not only forgives but also renews, heals, and restores spiritual brokenness. God's love not only cleanses from sin but also recreates, restores, and grants renewal. "The Lord says: 'I have created the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace, to those far and near. And I will heal them'" (Isaiah 57:19). "He forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases; he redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion" (Psalm 103:3-4).

Fifth, God's love is protective love. God always watches over, cares for, and protects His people from dangers and calamities. God's love is a safe refuge for us. "How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights" (Psalm 36:7-8).

Sixth, God's love is compassionate discipline. God does not treat the sinner as innocent, but He offers the opportunity for repentance and disciplines His people. This discipline stems from boundless love, not from anger. God always desires His people to repent, return to Him, and He Himself leads them back to live according to His Word. "My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, for the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in" (Proverbs 3:11-12).

Seventh, God's love is everlasting love. Our greatest encouragement is that God's love cannot be destroyed by any power, and nothing can separate us from His love, as the apostle Paul expressed: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39).

"Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits" (Psalm 103:2). Thank God for His love—a love that is unconditional, sacrificial, faithful, healing, protective, disciplining, and everlasting! Praise God! His love is strength and a source of encouragement that helps us remain steadfast, hopeful, and peaceful as we follow Him! May our lives always shine forth God's name, expressing His eternal and priceless love to those around us, so they may know God through our lives and turn in repentance to believe in Him! Amen!
