The Particle

This devotion uses the linguistic image of particles to illustrate that each member of the Christian community, though seemingly small, has an important role in the Body of Christ. Just as particles cannot stand alone but are essential for completing a sentence's meaning, each believer is created by God with a unique purpose and an irreplaceable contribution to the church. All of us are loved and have the opportunity to serve God according to His will.

# Particles

A particle in linguistics, and especially in ancient Koinē Greek, is a very short word that does not decline, does not conjugate, and does not belong to the categories of nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs. It is typically used to emphasize, connect ideas, express attitudes, add nuance to sentences, or create grammatical structures. In language, these particles, if standing alone, have no meaning in themselves; but when combined with other words, they contribute to making the meaning fuller and clearer. In other words, these particles are essential in language to help express meaning clearly, precisely, and completely as the author intends in a sentence. Therefore, particles must exist in language and be used according to the writer's clear purpose in human speech.

Each nation has a primary language, which contains different types of words—pronouns, nouns, verbs, particles, and so forth. If we imagine each person as a type of word, then a language is similarly like a nation with many people representing different types of words; whether large or small, all are necessary to support, connect, and create sentences full of meaning. When we think of the Christian family, God's church, within the community of believers, we notice that there are some brothers and sisters who are "special" at different levels of faith, yet are very important in the Christian community, because all are in the same body of Christ! No one is useless, for everyone is created with purpose in God's good plan! Thanks be to God! The Apostle Paul reminded us, "Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it" (1 Corinthians 12:27); "On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable" (1 Corinthians 12:22); "But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be" (1 Corinthians 12:18).

Though they are merely "particles," their function is truly wonderful, and it does not depend on their form. The qualities and function of each believing person are the same. God always has a good plan for each person, regardless of what nationality, appearance, voice, or language they have! We must always be grateful and rejoice because we are "fearfully and wonderfully made," as King David said, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well" (Psalm 139:14). Thanks be to God, who always loves humanity. Though we are small, His creation who often wander far from Him, God always gives us the opportunity to repent of sin and return to be His beloved people, and gives us the opportunity to serve Him! Thanks be to God who sent His only Son—Jesus Christ—born as a human to accomplish the plan of salvation, to open the only Way to the eternal Kingdom of Heaven! May this Christmas season overflow with hope for all people. May His Holy Spirit open hearts and minds, so that all may know the boundless love and eternal grace of Jesus Christ, and resolve to follow Him, unite together in Him, and serve God according to His holy will! Amen!

Though particles are small, they are great, Still doing important work to help the major words, Making statements, writings, and documents Clear, complete, without any excess!

Praise the name of God, awesome and majestic, Who created all things, miraculous and glorious! Each person, each appearance, each soul, Good in God, whatever their form may be. So let us be united together, With all our hearts following God, honoring His name!
