# Intimate Fellowship and Sharing

The term "hàn huyên" is commonly understood as intimate conversation and sharing of one's heart in a familiar and close manner. "Hàn huyên" is a Sino-Vietnamese word, originally written as 寒暄, where hàn means cold and huyên means warmth. In ancient times, when people met, they would often ask about the weather—whether it was cold or hot that day. Before children went to sleep, they would ask their parents if they felt cold, and the next morning upon waking, they would ask if their parents had slept warmly enough the night before. Over time, "hàn huyên" came to mean inquiring after one another and sharing one's feelings together. Besides "hàn huyên" 寒暄, there are also similar Sino-Vietnamese terms such as "hàn ôn" 寒溫 and "huyên lương" 暄涼. These were expressions used to exchange greetings about the weather when meeting—how warm or cold it was. Because the ancient climate alternated between hot and cold, causing people to frequently fall ill from weather-related conditions, when people encountered each other, they would inquire about each other's health, which was called "hàn huyên tâm sự" (intimate fellowship and sharing).(1)

While the Bible does not contain the term "hàn huyên," it contains many passages that emphasize believers sharing their hearts, encouraging one another, and supporting each other, as members of the body of Christ. This is precisely the spirit of "hàn huyên" in the life of the Christian community. Apostle Paul was a person who always longed to visit fellow workers, believers, and churches he had previously visited. He frequently expressed his desire to have intimate fellowship, to converse and share with them. Regarding Timothy, he wrote, "I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth" (1 Timothy 3:14-15); and "For I remember your tears, and I long day and night to see you, that I may be filled with joy" (2 Timothy 1:4). Regarding the church in Rome, he expressed, "For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you" (Romans 1:11).

The spirit of "hàn huyên" as taught in the Bible is not merely conversation, but rather positive action among believers in Christ. God's Word calls His people to meet together, to share, to encourage one another to live according to His teachings, as expressed in Hebrews 10:24-25: "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." Apostle Paul counseled believers that when speaking, they must speak words that build up, sharing positively: "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen" (Ephesians 4:29). Furthermore, whether meeting in person or not, God's people always maintain this spirit of "hàn huyên" through inquiring after one another, understanding needs, and interceding for each other: "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective" (James 5:16).

Jesus is not only one who teaches, but also one who sits down, converses intimately, listens, and shares the burdens of His people. When He encountered the Samaritan woman at the well, He sat by the well and conversed with her. He began with the everyday matter of drinking water, moved to the living water, and then touched upon her personal life (John 4:5-26). This is a very clear picture of the kind of "hàn huyên" we need to practice—beginning with everyday conversation and leading to deeper spiritual sharing, pointing toward eternal life in God's Kingdom. Let us follow Jesus's example and practice such positive and helpful fellowship with one another!

We give thanks to the Lord for teaching us how to have "hàn huyên" with everyone—not merely through ordinary inquiries, but with a heart of genuine care, seeing deeper into spiritual life, and taking positive action to help and intercede for all those around us. We pray that the Lord would grant us His love, that we may care for others; grant us wisdom to choose our words carefully, speaking words that benefit those who hear, encouraging and interceding for all; so that they may soon open their hearts to receive the Lord before His return! Amen!
