# Air Pollution

In 2024, Vietnam ranked 23rd for the worst air quality in the world and second worst in Southeast Asia, with Hanoi being the seventh most polluted capital city globally. On January 2, 2025, Hanoi was verified to have the second worst air quality in the world. In early 2025, Hanoi residents endured many weeks without a single day of good air quality. Vietnam's average PM2.5 concentration is 28.7μg/m³, exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines by 5–7 times. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from vehicle emissions, industrial exhaust, and forest fires can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, reducing life expectancy. Air pollution is estimated to cause 70,000 deaths annually in Vietnam, reducing average life expectancy by 16 months. Additionally, ground-level ozone pollution exacerbates respiratory diseases such as asthma, especially during hot seasons. Indoor air pollution from cooking, cleaning products, and poor ventilation also poses health risks. This shows that Hanoi is suffering from severe air pollution; the government is urgently seeking solutions to address the increasingly serious air pollution crisis plaguing the capital. (1)

Therefore, Hanoi needs to protect the environment and purify the air. The city is addressing air pollution by reducing personal vehicle use, increasing investment in public transportation, transitioning to green transportation systems, eliminating coal stove usage, enhancing street sanitation, and monitoring construction site hygiene. At the same time, wastewater issues and river cleanup efforts must be addressed, including urgent efforts to replenish water in the Tô Lịch River. The capital is modernizing waste collection services, with a pilot waste sorting project at the source in five inner-city districts. To effectively resolve environmental issues, the city needs cooperation among residents, businesses, local government, and scientists. (2)

In today's world, even though we may be living in cities that do not suffer from air pollution as severe as Hanoi, we are still being polluted by other things—the people around us, culture, work, speech, thoughts, religion, and so on. Our health may still be good, and much better than our fellow citizens in Vietnam and Hanoi, but we are living in this world where there are people who do not share our faith. When we live near them, if we are not careful, do not examine our hearts daily, do not check our every action and thought, sooner or later we will suffer spiritual pollution, and may be led astray by false believers, drawn far from God!

Just as Hanoi needs to purify its air and solve environmental pollution, so too does our spiritual life. "For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God" (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5). Therefore, we need to take specific steps to keep our spiritual lives pure.

First, we must examine our thoughts, ideas, and actions daily: "Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup" (1 Corinthians 11:28).

Second, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the things that are wrong and need cleansing: "Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts" (Psalm 139:23).

Third, confess and repent of the things that are wrong according to God's Word: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).

Fourth, regularly meditate on God's Word: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105); "The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple" (Psalm 119:130).

Fifth, always maintain intimate fellowship with God and pray without ceasing: "Establish my footsteps in your word, and let no iniquity get dominion over me" (Psalm 119:133). The breath of prayer is the source of fresh air that cleanses the inner passages of our spiritual lungs.

Finally, we need to take corporate responsibility for one another. Just as purifying the air requires collective cooperation, we must help one another, care for and support our brothers and sisters to live according to God's Word, in holiness as He has taught us. So that God's name may be glorified and made known to all people. "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing" (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

May the Holy Spirit of God teach us to live according to His Word, help us stay far from sin—from the pollution of this world, so that our lives become increasingly holy and increasingly reflect God's image; may God's power sanctify us so that through our daily lives, those around us may come to know God and open their hearts to receive Him as the Redeemer of their souls. Thank God! Amen!
