T.I.P - Glorify, Imprint, Serve

T.I.P

A woman dining at a restaurant in Louisiana noticed something unusual on the payment bill for her meal, which totaled $131. Below, printed in large letters, were the words: "WE ARE A NO-TIP RESTAURANT." Typically, in the United States, restaurant servers are customarily given tips ranging from 15% to 20% of the total bill amount.(1)

The custom of tipping in restaurants originated in medieval Europe, where it began as a practice among the nobility to reward servants for exceptional service. It was imported to the United States in the mid-1800s, brought back by wealthy Americans after they experienced this custom during their travels in Europe.(2) Initially, tipping faced opposition in the United States, but it became more widespread during the Reconstruction period and was solidified during Prohibition, when restaurant owners relied on tips to supplement workers' wages.(3)

Today, tipping (tip) is a cultural custom that expresses appreciation and gratitude toward those who perform service-oriented work. When customers wish to show their appreciation for good service, they give the server a tip. In many places around the world, such as the United States, tipped workers are often paid a lower base wage, and tips constitute a significant portion of their income. Tipping helps ensure they are fairly compensated for their work. Tips can also serve as motivation for workers to work more diligently. It also reflects customer satisfaction. Although tipping customs may vary globally, this practice generally reflects a balance between gratitude and an economic system that relies on consumer contributions to support service workers.

The Bible does not specifically mention tipping, because the cultural practice of tipping was not part of the biblical context. However, the Bible does teach us how to live with generous giving, fairness, and respectful treatment of workers. Tipping can contribute to the wages of service workers, helping meet the living needs of laborers. God's Word encourages us to do good and give generously when we are able to do so, which may be related to paying workers fairly: "Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act" (Proverbs 3:27). Likewise, Jesus taught us about generous hearts and the blessings that come from giving: "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you" (Luke 6:38). The Apostle Paul also reminded us to value the labor and contributions of workers, encouraging us to pay fair wages: "The worker deserves his wages" (1 Timothy 5:18). In all circumstances, we should show kindness and generosity toward others: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers" (Galatians 6:9–10).

Let us give thanks to God, the One who gives us all things. He also teaches us to be generous in doing good and to give to others when we are able to do so. Each time we give a T.I.P, let us remember the Lord and do these three things:

T - Exalt the Name of God, for He is King above all kings. "Sing to the glory of his name; offer him glorious praise!" (Psalm 66:2). "Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come into his courts" (Psalm 96:8).

I - Imprint deeply upon your heart God's grace, for He has given us all things, and above all, Jesus came into the world to save all sinners. "But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57). "Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!" (2 Corinthians 9:15).

P - Serve the Lord with all your heart throughout your life. "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord" (Romans 12:11). Always be enthusiastic and wholeheartedly devoted in serving the Lord.

We pray that the Holy Spirit will help us live faithfully and serve the Lord with all our hearts, knowing that God gives us all things. May His Name be glorified forever. Help us to live with gratitude toward God. Grant us hearts that care for the needs of those around us, treating everyone fairly and with respect, helping others come to know Him, and sharing what we are able to give, for all things belong to God! Thank you, Lord! Amen!

Exalt the Holy Name throughout all the earth, Christ Jesus, God our Lord, Who knows all, watches over all, provides for all, Proclaim the work of God to every place!

May our hearts forever serve the Lord, Treat one another with generosity, Help others believe and accept Christ, May His kingdom come with true joy!
