The devotional uses Chile's nationwide power outage as a metaphor for spiritual darkness—symbolizing sin, godlessness, and Satan's power. Jesus Christ is the Light of the world, and those who follow Him will escape darkness and walk in His eternal light.

# Darkness Overwhelming

On February 26, 2025, CNN reported that in Chile, authorities declared a state of emergency after nearly the entire country fell into a blackout, plunging the nation into darkness. Chile, a nation proud of its population of over 19 million people, has now virtually come to a standstill due to the power outage. The issue of "overwhelming darkness" has led to internet loss, workers trapped in buildings, and homes without electricity and water. Reports indicate that more than 8 million homes were affected by the blackout on Tuesday, February 25, while the country was facing summer temperatures of 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Traffic lights also went out in 14 of Chile's 16 regions, and most businesses and government agencies were forced to close early, unable to operate without power. This situation also caused chaos for Chile's transportation system, as people had to be evacuated from subway lines. However, hospitals and government buildings in this South American nation were able to continue essential operations thanks to backup generators.

To respond to the power outage, the Chilean government declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew to ensure public safety from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the incident, which may be related to high-voltage transmission lines from the Atacama Desert to the capital, Santiago. Chile's Interior Minister, Carolina Tohá, stated: "Our first concern and the reason for this announcement is to ensure the safety of our people. Clearly, this is something no one planned for."(1) It was truly an unexpected crisis for the Chilean people, to be "engulfed in darkness" throughout their entire nation! And it is even more terrifying when each of us lives in darkness and cannot see the path to walk!

In the Bible, when speaking of spiritual matters, darkness or obscurity often symbolizes sin, godlessness, and everything against God, and it includes:

1. Demonic forces - "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned" (Isaiah 9:1).

2. The condition of those not spiritually enlightened - "In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:4-5).

3. Those controlled by Satan's power, who live in darkness and need the Lord's salvation, "I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me" (Acts 26:18).

4. Eyes filled with sin—filling the body with spiritual darkness, as Jesus said, "But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" (Matthew 6:23).

Most of the world loves darkness to do things contrary to God's Word because they think no one will discover them, as the Lord said, "Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed" (John 3:19-20). Almighty God knows all things, and He Himself is the Light to show humanity the Way and to repent and return to Him, "When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life'" (John 8:12). Before believing in God, we were unregenerate people living in darkness, but after believing in God, we walk in God's light, as the apostle Paul expressed, "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light" (Ephesians 5:8).

To escape from the "power of darkness," we must be equipped with God's armor to overcome it, "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:11-12). Furthermore, we must examine our hearts and always maintain intimate fellowship with Him, "If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth" (1 John 1:6). Always remember God's promises, trust in His almighty power, and walk in the Light, "I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those sitting in darkness" (Isaiah 42:6-7).

Thank God, who always loves mankind, and has sent Jesus into the world, died in our place for our sins! May His Holy Spirit strengthen us, help us escape from darkness—the dark world, always walk in His Light eternally, live worthy of the sacrifice of His Son; so that our lives may be a light helping those around us know Him, and open their hearts to repent and return to the Father's House! Amen!

Darkness and sin, depart away, Temptation of the world, draw near no more, Growth each day, through the Light, His Word to meditate—almighty power! With all heart, with all mind, follow the Lord, Armor of the Holy Spirit, overcome all things, Protect and guide the way, fear not, Stand firm in faith, overflowing with grace!
