# The Door of Life

In the world, there are famous doors known for their structure and symbolism. The first famous door is the Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, in Rome. This door is opened only during the Holy Years, which occur once every twenty-five years, and it holds considerable religious significance. The door is sealed from the inside by a brick wall to prevent entry. The door, designed by Vico Consorti and cast by the Ferdinando Marinelli Art Foundry in the city of Florence, features intricate and impressive details. When the holy year arrives, the Pope strikes the brick wall behind the door with a silver hammer to open it. Afterward, the wall is completely destroyed and pilgrims can pass through. From a spiritual perspective, St. Peter's Holy Door symbolizes the spiritual journey from sin to grace. It also symbolizes the journey of conversion, sealed by an encounter with Christ. It is a message of God's mercy toward the weakness of humanity. Historically, St. Peter's Holy Door was placed in a frame of intricately carved marble on the orders of Pope Gregory XIII; it was executed by Vico Consorti in 1949.(a)

Another door, symbolic of history, is the Columbus Door at the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., standing nearly 17 feet high and weighing more than 20,000 pounds (approximately 10,000 kilograms), made of bronze. The Columbus Door was created by Randolph Rogers to commemorate the work of Lorenzo Ghiberti, specifically the Gates of Paradise in Florence. This bronze door depicts scenes from the life of explorer Christopher Columbus and is a celebrated symbol of American history.(b)

Furthermore, Tunisia (in North Africa) is considered to have some of the most beautiful doors in the world, particularly known for their brilliant blue color, intricate ironwork, and rivet design, commonly seen in the capital city of Tunis and the town of Sidi Bou Said. Rivet craftsmanship has made these doors a distinctive feature of Tunisian architecture. The main characteristics of Tunisian doors are: bright blue color, which is the most common color of Tunisian doors; rivets and intricate patterns are often incorporated into the design; culturally, these doors are considered a reflection of the craftsmanship and artistic heritage of the region. The craftsmen who created them invested great skill and love into their work. Tunisian doors are typically made of wood and then reinforced with metal. The shapes and patterns on Tunisian doors are usually created using metal rivets. Thanks to this technique, the patterns endure for a long time. To keep such doors beautiful, owners can occasionally simply repaint them to preserve them.(1)

God's Word also tells us of other doors, such as: the door of the tabernacle, gates of the city, doors of corridors, doors of the assembly, and so forth. However, in their spiritual meaning, doors generally symbolize opportunity, access, protection, judgment, choice, readiness, God's intervention, and so on. But we will consider only three important meanings of doors here:

First, the door symbolizes "the opportunity to spread the gospel or guide others to know God," as in 2 Corinthians 2:12, where the apostle Paul says, "When I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, even though the Lord had opened a door for me there."

Second, the door symbolizes "an invitation" to enter into a covenant with Christ, as in Revelation 3:20, where Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me"—those who hear His knock and open the door, He will enter and dine with them, and that person will have an intimate relationship with Him like a member of the family, dining together.

Third, the door carries the symbolic meaning of God's power to break through barriers, as in Psalm 24:7-10, "Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in! Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in! Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory."

Thank God, He has broken the chains of sin that bound us, rescued us from darkness; He has opened the door for us to enter and have an intimate relationship with Him—the Door to eternal Life (John 10:9). God has also given us doors of opportunity to serve Him, to proclaim the Gospel so that all may know His glorious Name! But what are we doing? Have we seen the "doors of opportunity to testify about Him"? May we beseech the Lord to strengthen us to recognize and seize the doors of opportunity He shows us, and boldly testify to His love and salvation to all whom we meet; and may the Holy Spirit be with our lips and open the hearts of those who hear so that they may come to know God, boldly invite Jesus to dwell in their hearts, be transformed in their lives, and receive Jesus as their Savior before He returns! Amen!

Thank You, Lord, almighty and unchanging, You are the Truth, the Way, and the Life, Lord, You are the Door full of love, Grant that I may live joyfully, relying on You all my life! May the grace of heaven's kingdom cover us, Help us to obey Your Word, Ready to act today, To proclaim Your love to all who are in need!
