Love in Life's Trials

This devotional reflects on human love and solidarity amid the tragedy of Typhoon Yagi in Vietnam in 2024, where compassion and mutual aid eased the suffering of loss. The author reminds us that God's love is the most precious and noble thing, and must be expressed through the lives of believers toward those around them.

# September 7, 2024: Typhoon Yagi, a Category 3 storm, made landfall in northern Vietnam. This was one of the most intense typhoons to strike Vietnam in decades, causing severe damage across 26 provinces and cities. It brought heavy rains, followed by flooding, landslides, and destruction of much infrastructure. More than 350 people died or went missing, over 2,000 were injured, more than 200,000 homes were damaged, along with many government offices, schools, and medical facilities (as of the morning of September 16, according to Vietnamese media).

In this great disaster, Vietnam received assistance from international friends, including Australia, the United States, Japan, Switzerland, South Korea, India, and New Zealand. Moreover, images on social media showed people helping one another through the calamity. In the conclusion of an article by Tuổi Trẻ, the author offered a "spiritual remedy against the typhoon" – "Human compassion and love for one another always brings people together and uplifts the spirit, so that we may overcome every challenge and hardship in life." The author wrote, "The typhoon passed, the floods came, but in the most difficult circumstances, unity and the spirit of mutual care allowed losses to be somewhat soothed as warm stories of human compassion appeared everywhere. All of this serves as a reminder that in any circumstance, human compassion is always the most solid foundation."

We give thanks to God, for He has given human beings the capacity for love and compassion, which has been shown forth during life's storms! The typhoon passed, the floods came, but in the most difficult circumstances, unity, love, support, and mutual help have brought some comfort to the losses each person has suffered. We thank God, who is Love itself, always merciful to all people. Because of His love for humanity, He came down to earth as a person and suffered death in place of the sins of all people! Through this, people now have the Way that leads to eternal life in Heaven. In all of life's circumstances, love is the most precious and beautiful thing that can lead people to God and to one another! The Apostle Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth, "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love" (1 Corinthians 13:13).

Indeed, without love, all that we do becomes meaningless, as 1 Corinthians 13 reveals. This truth reminds God's people to examine every thought, attitude, and action toward those around us. "Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God" (Ephesians 5:1-2). Furthermore, "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good" (Romans 12:9). We must be sincere in our love; we must always think of "what is good," the things that benefit our brothers and sisters. We must think of others' welfare more than our own; we must know how to sacrifice and endure all things; and do all things out of reverence for God, for God's Name: "For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen" (Romans 11:36).

We give thanks to God, who always loves and sustains us, and teaches us to think of our brothers and sisters, those around us, to love one another and help one another when needed! We pray that His unconditional love may always overflow in our hearts; grant us to do all things through His love, knowing how to forgive and help one another; so that all people may come to know God through our lives, and open their hearts to receive Him as the Savior of their lives! Amen!

God's love transcends all measure, Living in us through the days, Glory to the Father's Name, Praise and thanks, to You, Holy God!

Following in God's footsteps, let us live, Forgiving, loving, as He does, Supporting our brothers, in His Church, Together sharing, helping each day!
