Change to Draw Closer to God
Ngoc Huynh Bich · Apr 5, 2024
This devotion compares changes in material life with spiritual transformation in Christian living. Although change is difficult, drawing closer to God requires us to abandon sinful ways and live according to God's Word in holiness and righteousness.
# A Change of Heart
Recently, Costco announced that they will be changing the packaging of their rotisserie chicken, a beloved item that many people enjoy because it is both delicious and affordable—just five dollars for a perfectly roasted chicken! This change is not a price increase, but rather a change in how the rotisserie chicken is packaged. Instead of the roasted chicken being placed in a hard plastic clamshell container, it will now be wrapped in a plastic bag. Although this change to plastic bags will reduce environmental impact by 75 percent, people all over the place who love this five-dollar rotisserie chicken have expressed opinions, concerns, and mixed emotions. Some people felt uncomfortable with this change because they enjoyed using the clamshell as a temporary serving dish, while others were delighted to see the change reduce plastic waste going into the environment. Making changes in our present lives is difficult for most of us. Even though changes are meant to improve our lives and bring progress; we often hesitate and delay for a while before beginning! The spiritual life of a Christian is the same way. The Lord wants us to truly repent, change our hearts, live holy lives, and obey Him with all our hearts; but His people often do not change, hesitating because they fear difficulty and change… As a result, we fall into the snare of the devil and distance ourselves from God! If we want to draw closer to God, then we must truly change our lives—live according to the Way, which means living according to God's Word, as the apostle Paul advised: "that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old self which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new self which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:22-24). As people who love God, we need to begin today, each day, setting aside the sinful ways of our past, avoiding all temptation, and instead embracing a new life, trusting God with all our hearts, and living in holiness according to His Word! We pray that the Holy Spirit will strengthen us, teach us to live according to God's will; help us to meditate upon, remember God's Word, and apply it each day; so that we may be the light of the world, the salt of the earth, and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all those around us; that God's Name may be glorified and all people praise Him forever! Amen!
Each day examine your every deed, Compare it with His Commandments true, The old ways cast aside, no hesitation, Become a new person, transformed anew! With all your heart change by God's Word, Jesus' Light shining each new day, Salt of the earth preserving all, Help others trust in God today!
