Acts 12:1-17Jeremiah 33:3Joel 2:21

The devotion recounts the miraculous story of Sundar Singh, a Tibetan Christian miraculously rescued from a well by God, similar to God's deliverance of Apostle Peter in Acts. Through these miracles, the article encourages readers to trust wholeheartedly in God's power and experience His help in all difficult circumstances.

# Beyond Our Understanding

Frederick Fyvie Bruce (1910-1990), commonly known as F.F. Bruce, was a Scottish biblical scholar and theologian. He served as Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester from 1959 to 1978. Bruce is regarded as one of the most influential evangelical scholars of the latter half of the twentieth century. Bruce recounted the story of Sundar Singh, a remarkably devoted Tibetan Christian who was miraculously rescued by the Lord from a prison at the bottom of a well. Because he preached the Gospel, Sundar Singh was thrown into a well, which was then sealed and locked. The authorities sought to kill him this way. At the bottom of the well, he could see the bones and rotting corpses of others who had died there. On the third night in the well, Sundar Singh heard someone open the well cover and move it aside. A voice told him to grab a rope being lowered down. Sundar Singh grasped the rope and was very grateful, for the rope had a loop into which he could place his feet, since his hands had been injured when he fell into the well. Sundar Singh was pulled out of the well, the cover was sealed and locked again, but when he tried to thank his rescuer, he found no one around. As dawn broke, he returned to where the authorities had arrested him and continued preaching the Gospel. News of his Gospel preaching reached the ears of the official who had imprisoned him in the well, and Sundar Singh was brought before this official for trial. When this official said that surely someone must have obtained a key and unlocked the lock to release Sundar Singh, they went to find the key to open the well cover, only to discover it still hanging on the belt of this very official. Truly "beyond our understanding," is it not? [1] Bruce said, "God is still writing the Acts of the Apostles."

Indeed, in the Bible, Acts 12:1-17 records a similar story in which the Lord rescued the apostle Peter from prison, and no one could explain how Peter could have escaped! The Lord sent His angel to "strike Peter on the side and wake him up," unlock his chains, tell him to "put on your clothes and sandals," and follow the angel out of the prison! It is miraculous, beyond human comprehension, and the Lord performed this miracle again for the Tibetan Christian, Sundar Singh.

Have you ever experienced God's miracles? Our God is the One who can do all things, even things we have never imagined! Through absolute faith, trusting God with all our hearts, obeying God, and living for God, His disciples and faithful people can experience God's power and miracles! Only He can help us overcome every trial and difficulty in life, even moments of mortal danger! The Lord said in Jeremiah 33:3, "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know."

In all things, let us fear and trust God with all our hearts, all our strength, all our minds, and all our souls! Let us spend time in prayer, seeking God's will in all things! "Be not afraid, O land; be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things" (Joel 2:21). Praise God, He is almighty and can do all things; nothing is difficult for God! We pray that God forgive our weakness and lack of faith; we ask that His Holy Spirit strengthen us, keep us standing firm, trusting completely in His power; we ask that He open the eyes of our hearts to see the miraculous works God does in our lives, and help us proclaim His works to those around us so that they too may come to know God and accept Him as their Savior and Redeemer, we give thanks to God! Amen!
