Miss Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, into a wealthy English family. Miss Nightingale was the founder of modern nursing in England. She became famous while managing and training nurses during the Crimean War, during which she organized nighttime care for wounded soldiers in Constantinople, earning her the nickname "The Woman with the Lamp." She significantly reduced the mortality rate by improving sanitation and daily nutrition standards.
After the war, she continued nursing work and contributed to establishing the importance of expanding women's roles in this field. She founded a nursing school at St. Thomas' Hospital in London in 1860, which became the birthplace of modern nursing.
If you have ever been injured or ill and been treated by nurses, you can thank Florence Nightingale. Her name has become a symbol of helping those in difficulty and illness, and this is largely due to her lifetime of dedicated work.
God used Miss Nightingale as a pioneer in the field of service with remarkable results and great influence on nursing worldwide—a woman with compassionate love for others in greater need than herself, a woman wholly devoted to serving others. She fulfilled the mission God entrusted to her, which to this day universities and the nursing profession continue to remember and express gratitude for her contributions, which have improved care and nursing for the better!
When we consider these things, let us ask God to reveal His purpose for us, just as He used Miss Nightingale. We trust in God's strength as we follow, as King David asked and joyfully fulfilled God's will: "Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground" (Psalm 143:10); "I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart" (Psalm 40:8).
Miss Florence is a Christian woman who represents those engaged in service work. It is work that is not always an easy path to follow, but sometimes it can push us beyond the limits of our ability to accomplish greater things for God, because He is the Source of infinite power for us. God Himself is merciful and does good to all people: "The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made" (Psalm 145:9), and He always desires that we have compassion and help others: "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow" (Isaiah 1:17).
As beloved children of God, we Christians are encouraged through Miss Nightingale's life to serve God faithfully according to His calling, as the Apostle Paul advised: "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord" (Romans 12:11).
Our lives on earth—we do not know what tomorrow will bring, very possibly tomorrow may not come at all! Therefore, we should serve God today, doing what God wants us to do according to Scripture's teaching. Begin with small things: read God's Word, pray, seek God's will, and obey.
May His Holy Spirit guide and teach us to follow God's will according to His Word; so that our lives bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit, glorify God's Name, and we become channels of His blessings and grace to those around us! Amen!
