Taste and See the Sweetness of God's Word

"Taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him!" - Psalm 34:8

"How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from Your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow Your righteous laws." - Psalm 119:103-106

During a recent trip to Europe, we had the opportunity to visit Germany and heard advertisements about the famous "fish bread," which is very delicious in that country. If you walk into train stations, you can immediately see bread stands at intersections and corners, displaying all kinds of bread that look so appealing that everyone wants to stop and buy one to eat. One time, at the train station in Doumont, we saw three beautiful and appetizing bread stands at three corners. We stopped to look and took souvenir photos, while my friends came to buy and eat. This time they tried the fish bread just as they had heard advertised. The fish bread comes with five types of fish, but the fish are still alive. We heard people say it's safe and hygienic because the fish are salted and cleaned thoroughly. Nevertheless, we did not dare eat "live fish," not because we feared it wasn't clean, but because we were not accustomed to eating raw fish. Our friends ate it and said it was delicious, and they invited me to try it, but I didn't. As a result, we never found out just how delicious the fish bread in Germany truly is!

Perhaps with every food in this world, we have to try it at least once to know how good it really is, don't we? Even if someone in our family has tried it before, we still have some doubt, because we ourselves have never tasted it. It's the same with God's Word. It is very precious and very sweet, and has the power to help us solve every problem in our lives, but if we don't try to contemplate it, dig deeper, and understand it—if we don't "taste" it, don't "eat" it—how can we experience the power of His Word! The author of Psalm 119 has tasted God's Word and he says, "How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" (Psalm 119:103). He also tells us that, "I gain understanding from Your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:104-105). King David, the ancestor of Jesus, a leader of Israel, and a king who feared God, who reigned for forty years, experienced the goodness and blessing of God's Word, which everyone must "taste"—meditate upon and practice. He advised us, "Taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him" (Psalm 34:8). Because of the miraculous power of God's Word, the author of the Psalms made a vow to Him, saying, "I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow Your righteous laws" (Psalm 119:106). If you have not yet truly tasted God's Word and His precepts, begin today. If you have already tasted it but have not yet experienced the power of Scripture, then wholeheartedly focus on meditating, pray to Him for enlightenment, and ask Him to let you experience the power of His Word! We give thanks to God for giving us His Word to meditate upon, to seek His face each day, to experience the sweetness, love, peace, and power of Scripture! We praise God, His Name above all names. God's Word is the Word of Life, always sustaining us, giving us strength and grace so that we may be strong and faithful in following Him every moment! We pray that His Holy Spirit will touch the heart of each of us, guide us to live according to God's Word, glorify His Name, and grant us the wisdom to faithfully spread His Gospel of salvation to all those around us! Amen!

His Word, taste and see, Sweeter than honey, sweeter than cream and sugar! If you don't taste and try, How can you know His love? If you don't meditate every day, Never chew, never swallow, you'll know nothing! If you only gaze and pass by, Hear but don't act, what benefit to yourself? If you only read carelessly, Glancing over and forgetting, your spirit grows poor!

His Word illuminates the heart, Grants understanding and wisdom greater than others, Nothing in this life remains forever, Days pass and months turn, seasons come and go! What remains in us, What is eternal, lofty, and wholly good? Could it not be Scripture and Gospel, Jesus Christ—the Root forever and always? His Word is eternal and sweet, We should awaken, consume it regularly!

Holy Scripture lives on unchanged, Each day read it first before all things, Read it again and again, So our hearts remember and cherish His Word! May our hearts do right, without error, Focus, discipline, act now with joy, Live according to His Commandments without ceasing, Walk in God's will with abundant blessing! His Word—Light and Goodness, Let us quickly hold it fast, avoid straying from the path!
