# Sacrifice for One Another

"Let each of you look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." - Philippians 2:4

During World War II, a group of Allied prisoners of war were captured and enslaved by the Japanese military. The Japanese soldiers were brutal, beating and killing the prisoners without cause. Moreover, because their living conditions were so extremely harsh, the prisoners quarreled constantly, fought among themselves, and hoarded food. People treated each other as enemies and lived like animals. One day, after returning from labor, the guards counted the shovels and found one missing. The camp's rules were very strict because they feared the prisoners would use a shovel as a weapon to attack the guards. The Japanese commandant ordered that prisoners be executed one by one until the one who stole the shovel confessed their crime. After the Japanese shot one man to set an example, a military chaplain standing in the line stepped forward and presented himself to the commandant. Without saying a word, the Japanese officer drew his revolver and shot the chaplain dead on the spot. The prisoners were then ordered to disperse. The next morning, when the Japanese guards recounted the shovels, they discovered that they had miscounted the day before—no one had actually stolen a shovel. Word spread throughout the camp that the chaplain had voluntarily stepped forward the day before to end the unjust killing of his fellow prisoners. Everyone was moved by this example of sacrifice. From that time on, the prisoners lived in harmony and constantly looked for ways to help one another to follow the chaplain's example. Because of this, they survived in the camp until they were liberated by the Allied forces in 1945.

To sacrifice for others is an action that demonstrates concern for the needs of others rather than for ourselves. The military chaplain sacrificed his own life so that other prisoners could be spared death, even though he did not know who they were! The Lord's teaching tells us, "Let each of you look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others" (Philippians 2:4). Even in difficult circumstances like the present crisis, we should also think of others—such as sewing masks to donate to those in need, giving aid to help those who are suffering and destitute, praying for and encouraging our brothers and sisters when needed. Let us imitate Jesus and sacrifice for one another, share with each other, help each other, so that God is pleased and His name is proclaimed to those around us! The Apostle Paul also encouraged us, saying, "Just as I try to please everyone in all I do, not seeking my own advantage but that of many, so that they may be saved" (1 Corinthians 10:33). May God help us know how to care for others and express it through good deeds! Amen!

Brothers and sisters, think of one another, Sacrifice and help to lift up the spirit, So that all may draw near, In God's love, finding joy in abundance! Cast away selfishness and pride, May God's love forever overflow, Good news, grace, and heaven, Wholeheartedly sharing, bringing peace to all!
